This is the ORIGINAL Professor Television ™ Photo-theremin. There's nothing quite like it. You can play the Photo-theremin by moving your hand in the air like any other theremin but instead of an antenna, the Photo-theremin has a light sensitive eye that controls the pitch depending on how much light falls on it. Because it works with light, not antenna capacitance, the Photo-theremin is not susceptible to radio interference like some ordinary theremins are. Unlike other light activated theremins, the Photo-theremin is not just a noisemaking toy. It's clean triangle wave tone ranges from a low rolling bass to a very high inaudible frequency. Modulating light sources like video monitors, florescent lighting, and strobe lights produce funky pitch modulations. You can even play it with a flashlight, laser pointer, or TV remote control. In addition, the Photo-theremin has a low frequency oscillator (LFO). The LFO can modulate the frequency of the theremin using either a square wave (makes it sound like a spaceship landing) or triangle wave (gives it a creepy sci-fi vibrato). You can also control the rate and level of the LFO. |
