Operating System Love-Hate-O-Meter
06/20/2005
Data was collected using the Google search engine with “love (operating system)” and “hate (operating system)” as the search criteria. I was inspired to do this when I saw the “Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter”. It seemed to me to be an inaccurate representation of users attitudes towards various operating systems, namely BeOS. I think “love” and “hate” are more frequently used and accepted contrasting words of opinion. I also think Google is a much better search engine than AltaVista, the search engine used in the Sucks-Rules-O-Meter.

As you can see the most loved OS is Linux with 45,400 loves, and the most hated is Windows with 30,000 hates. BeOS wins out with the highest percentage of loves at around 98%, while Windows looses again with more than 70% hates. Kind of makes you wonder why Windows is by far the most used operating system. If people have such hatred for it and so much love for others then why does Windows have a market share of around 95% on the desktop PC? In this author's humble opinion this is because of only one thing: monopoly.
